The First Nations people of Australia are comprised of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. They were the original inhabitants of the continent. And they represent the world’s oldest continuous culture, with a history spanning over 65,000 years.
When you arrive in Australia or go to almost any event, you hear something like this: “Reconciliation Australia acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.”
It’s like a constant Public Service Admission of Guilt.
The Māori people of New Zealand are not related to the First Nations peoples of Australia. They arrived in New Zealand via seafaring canoes from eastern Polynesia, likely between 1320 and 1350.
New Zealand has its own special mea culpa: “Acknowledging Māori as tangata whenua (people of the land) is a way of recognizing their historical connection to the land and their ongoing presence and cultural significance.”
They are both well-meaning attempts to admit that the Europeans stole the land from the native folks through bogus treaties, payments of little value, and genocide. Is it sincere? I am not qualified to say. But after years of affirmative action, preferential treatment, and government reparations, the native peoples in both cultures appear to be struggling mightily to adapt to the modern world. Perhaps they will never figure out how. Who knows?
I’m guessing that feel-good slogans are probably not going to make any substantive difference. And it definitely pisses off the anti-WOKE contingent of the white population in both countries, especially when they do it at Veterans Day events. Resentment is rising—on both sides of the divide.

I spent a fair amount of time hanging with tribal friends around various Indian reservations in the American Southwest during my fifteen years working for the Forest Service at Grand Canyon. And those reservations all had one thing in common—other than maybe Havasupai—and that was the undeniable fact that the Indians were given land the white man didn’t want. That is, of course, until oil, coal, copper, or uranium were unearthed. But the Indians were always relocated to godforsaken lands without water, trees, or any obvious natural resource of value. And they were left to fend for themselves. Just take a little trip out to Navajo or Paiute land and tell me what you see. It resembles a temperate Mars. Imagine trying to live there.
But that is not the case in New Zealand. The Europeans stole most of the Māori’s best territory, for sure. And they murdered and plundered. But the Māori still ended up with rich agricultural lands on which they live to this very day. And yet, they have not prospered. Their farms are overgrown, and their houses require significant repairs. As we drove around the North Island of New Zealand, it was easy to tell when a Māori farm ended and a white farm began by the freshly-painted fences and well-tended fields. When I asked why that was, I was told that it was a cultural thing. “The Māori don’t believe the land is meant to be ‘worked’. It is to be left in its natural state. The Europeans believe the land is to be harnessed for profit.” And therein lies the rub.
“Natural Values” is a popular catch-all phrase used to describe everything native to Australia. I heard it used constantly to describe all manner of activities—cuisine, government goals, music, politics, land use—and I never figured out what the hell it meant. It reminded me of the wiggle words “transparency” and “sustainability” in America.
We never heard anyone talking politics during our travels in Australia and New Zealand, so we had to draw our conclusions based on impressions and headlines. Both countries are constitutional monarchies. Australia has only two parties, Labor (Center Left Liberal) and the Liberal-National Coalition (Center Right Conservative). Labor retained its comfortable majority in the election this past May, due in large part to Trump’s punishing tariffs. New Zealand has the same two national parties as Australia, but places more power in its parliament, thus requiring more consensus-building. New Zealand had some of the strictest and longest COVID lockdowns, and the nation is still reeling from the policies initiated by the Labor government during that scary period. As a result, the voters propelled the Conservatives to power in 2023. We found both nations to be pretty liberal by American standards. And polling in both countries has consistently shown for many years that the biggest issue for the voters is how to handle their indigenous peoples.
We never saw any Latinos and very few blacks. The blacks were from Africa. Most of the non-Europeans are Asians. They are rapidly nearing twenty percent of the population in New Zealand and Australia. The Chinese have been there since the time of European occupation, and many are quite wealthy. While there’s a general wariness and distrust of the Chinese government, Aussies and Kiwis tend to hold more positive views about Chinese culture and the Chinese people.
Asians love to buy the Melbourne wedding packages and flock to the city in February to get married at the ornate government buildings. Australians go to Asia and Fiji to get married in July. The wedding industry in Australia rakes in about $4 billion a year, and a lot of the happy couples come from Asia—China, Vietnam, India, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
It seemed very weird to see only white people doing manual labor. Downunders work hard and seem quite content. We saw no immigrant labor force.
I have no idea why, but a lot of Kiwis wear bright yellow or orange safety vests. It gives the false impression that a third of the country works on a road crew or in construction, but apparently it’s some sort of strange fashion statement or informal uniform.
There are some homeless people—mostly natives—sleeping silently on the streets of the big cities like spaced-out koalas, but there are no panhandlers. I was impressed with the tidiness and detached behavior of the street people. There seemed to be many government and church-related feeding stations in many of the parks, and the food looked quite tasty. Given the high unemployment rate for many native people, the gentle climate, generous government safety nets, and a low crime rate, I was a bit surprised we didn’t see more homelessness Down Under. It seemed like a good place to be down and out.
It was quite interesting to see Australia and New Zealand trying to deal with many of the same racial issues faced by America today. Bridging the racial divide is never easy. But the folks down under have taken an interesting approach, starting with the admission that they have made many mistakes and have blood on their hands. White America seems Hell bent on ignoring its sins and pretending that Manifest Destiny is a get-out-of-jail card and the will of god. I have no idea whether the Aussies and Kiwis will ultimately solve the racial Rubik’s cube, but they are at least trying to add a little decency and respect to the mix. And perhaps that’s all that anyone can really ask for in the end.

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I actually thought youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy looking for attention.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important.
